They
are also susceptible to hypoglycemia attacks, particularly from
birth thru about 4 months of age, so they must eat regularly.
There is nothing any scarier than coming home from work to find
your tiny little dog laying on the floor, unconscious, with
teeth clenched and having to rush them to the emergency hospital
because they have had a hypoglycemic attack.

Gretchen
I speak from firsthand experience – my little 4.4 (now)
lb. Gretchen had one and while I recognized the symptoms, she
didn’t respond to sugar water, karo syrup, etc. so I had
no choice but to rush her 35 miles (in 23 minutes!) to a clinic.
Once the doctor got an iv started, which is a challenge on a 2
lb. puppy, Gretchen was back on her feet within 10 minutes. She
simply hadn’t eaten properly that day. She has never had
another problem but I make sure she eats before I leave the house
every single morning. |
All
of my smaller dogs believe their purpose in life is to get as much
love and attention as they can possibly get and are frequently found
perched on either side of my lap. The teacups really need someone
at home with them most of the time or access to a doggie door as
they have tiny bladders and cannot go for long periods of time without
going to the bathroom. |
